A Take a Look at the Action Genre in Films

in Action

People always look for excitement when watching movies. Boring scenes are a no-no for spectators, so directors often add scenes of fights, battles, and war to the films. Eventually, this led to a genre of its own with a large following and starring iconic actors: the action film.

Action has distinct elements that other genres don’t have. A hero is thrust into different challenges, like saving a damsel-in-distress, retrieving an item, or killing the main villain. It usually involves fistfights, gun battles, car chases, explosions, and stunts. The hero is almost always put into life-threatening situations, but is always guaranteed victory at the end. In action movies, the plot usually takes a backseat to give priority to the excitement of the scenes.

The action genre in movies began in the early days of the film industry via swashbuckling adventure or western themes. In the 1950s and the 1960s, the emergence of several iconic cowboy and spy-adventure films brought the genre to more audiences. The 1970s saw the influx and the rise in popularity of martial arts films, which became extremely popular among Western audiences. The 1980s saw the rise of famous action stars, who would enjoy popularity right up to the present.

The 1990s would be dominated by sequels and the introduction of computer-generated imagery (CGI) into action movies. CGI dramatically reduced the need for stuntmen, although it backfired when the scenes did not look real enough. One can witness these extremely popular scenes in free online movies full of excitement.

Today’s trends see the incorporation of kung-fu or martial arts scenes to Western films largely influenced by the massive success of the Hong Kong action cinema around the world. Current film-viewing habits also saw the rise of new action stars, and the mixing of action into other genres, such as comedy and drama. Nonetheless, the basic elements of action still remain, allowing one to watch free online movies full of thrill.

In spite of the usual criticism—mediocre plot, repetitive action, and common themes—that action films receive, they still captivate audiences. There are movies, and there free online movies full of action that have had enjoyed being this at the box office. For sure, the action film will continue to be a “breadwinner” for many production studios in the years to come.
